I paid the rent for the month of May in the amount of $128, a late fee was added on to that in the amount of $24. I was called and told on Saturday 5/28/11 that if I did not pay the $24 they will add another late charge on.

What?!!! That is crazy. The late fee has nothing to do with the rent. I went to the unit today and could not get in as Public Storage added their lock on to my unit.

It is a late fee not the rent, I paid the rent. I understand that if I pay the rent late I incur a late charge I read that in the contract. I do not remember it saying that they will charge late charges on top of late charges, that even though you paid your rent and have they charge a late charge you can't get into your unit.

The people in the office just say "well it's not us it's the company we are charging you anything". Wow that's customer service for you.

Monetary Loss: $24.

Location: New York, New York

Exactly!! This is what my public storage says also, that it's the STATE that makes them charge the LIEN fee. I need to check this out....

I think it's terrible that a Public Storage employee would bad mouth the company and the tenants....Obviously another of the typical uneducated, heartless people that they use to live on site and pay the low wages to. They don't care if you have special circumstances or financial hardship.

They will not work with you and there are no exceptions. One of these days, someone will come along, treat people right and steal all their customers one by one.

I would love to see them go under. I just hate them.

To the OP, as well as any other dumb *** customer that rents at Public Storage... If you pay your rent ON TIME, you won't get a late fee. Rent's due on the first, what's so *** hard about that? If you pay late due to circumstances beyond your control, that's different... but make sure you pay before the end of the month! If you're late, you pay a late fee! Simple as that! Own up to it!! I hate when people complain about late fees and the such... like I said, you all wouldn't have a problem if you paid your *** rent on time!

I laugh when people call PS a "scam"... for what reason? None at all. Customers never take responsibility of their actions, they're the first to blame it on the "system" and PS. Most customers are terrible people.

I'm a PS employee, and I must say, PS tenants/customers are some of the most spoiled clients I've ever met in my life without a question. They expect to be given everything when they don't deserve it.

I'm not really defending the company, as I can't stand the company and I work for them. I'm just being realistic, and based on the 4+ years that I've been working for them.

The fees at PS are usurious and exploit customers who are already facing challenges. Fees on top of fees...make it IMPOSSIBLE to get the rent paid.

Realty check: Not everyone can always pay on time every time. This business exploits those who are going through transitions etc.

PS is inflexible...and guess what, they reward long term customers with even HIGHER RENTS. FOLKS avoid public storage...give your stuff away....These places are a WASTE of money unless you can pay up front and plan short term use only.

That's because NORMAL companies don't charge late fees TWICE in one month. Oh, I'm sorry, one is a Late Fee for $25 (due on the 6th), the other is a LIEN FEE, for $65 (due on the 29th), which is *** RIDICULOUS.

To pay $90 in fees for a $120 unit, because you're 24 days late with your payment. That's just robbery.

How is not paying for 24 days not robbery?

I hope you don't really mean that. I rented my unit to store some things while I move.

I pay; I put stuff in, and I shuffle it around as I need to. I never asked you for anything, yet you take it upon yourself to tell me I'm spoiled?

I never say this about other people just trying to make a living, but I'll make an exception for you. I think you need to spend some time on unemployment!

I work in retial and I learn the customer is always right no matter my opinion . But a customer also told me to put my self in there place. Which goes back to the customer is always right.

Corporate forces the managers to collect the fees by the last day of the month at all costs. So we have to make things up to get you to pay that fee by closing on the last day. We can't charge fees on top of fees.

The late charges are nuts, My last month, Last month an employee told me if I went 30 over the STATE made them add $85. lol two late fees per 30 days and then the STATE makes them add $85 ..... Sure Moving out this month last from a unit I have held for 3 Years.

the employee that told you that you would get another late fee is wrong but with them putting the lock on your unit it is so that way people don't move out with out paying PS greedy *** because you know that just seem the think that they are so broke and god for bid they lose $24.00 our big shots may have to go with something but as us employees they don't give a *** about us either

You paid the rent on time, right? If so you have run into one of Public Storage's scams.

Talk to your consumer affairs division of your bank or state. Find out the procedures and look into whether or not your credit is damaged.

Take action. The company is one big pain and it is better to incure the cost of moving than to continue to be pushed around by these jerks.

Sounds like these guys are playing the usual game of overcharge. If you paid on time, no late fee.

However, PS seems to enjoy these mind games. Be prepared to keep fighting this overcharge. Suggestion: letter to your state atty general, the BBA, and everyone else you can find. Then, when you can get back in, move.

It's better than putting up with these company wonks. Keep receipts and try to get reinbursement. PS enjoys doing everything they can to make the experience impossible.

Also, talk to your bank. Find out if the late charge is damaging your credit and take every action possible.
